About this event

Across the philanthropic sector, more organizations are requesting demographic data from nonprofits to better understand who is or isn’t receiving funding, which communities are being reached or excluded and where potential biases or disparities may be impacting outcomes. However, collecting this data burdens nonprofits, as they often need to present it in various ways for different funders.

To address this, Candid has launched Demographics via Candid, a campaign to promote greater transparency in the field and expand our collective knowledge base. The campaign streamlines and standardizes data collection by allowing nonprofits to share their demographic information just once on their Candid GuideStar profile. This data can then be easily and freely accessed by funders, researchers and other stakeholders across the field.

Join us for a conversation with leaders from Candid and the James Irvine Foundation to hear how regional coalition building and centralizing demographic data collection reduces the burden on nonprofits while enhancing funders’ ability to access important data. Together, we will explore how our network can get involved in this work, discover opportunities to shift our practices and learn about the implications of this campaign for funder and grantee relationships across the Northwest.

Speakers

Kim Canfield, Grants Manager, The James Irvine Foundation

Kim joined The James Irvine Foundation in 2019 as the grants manager, bringing over 15 years of experience working with grantees and grantmakers alike on both coasts. She works with a rockstar grants administration team and coordinates with program and operations teams across the foundation to deliver $160 million annually to grantee partners that work to create a California where all low-income workers have the power to advance economically. Prior to joining Irvine, she was the grants manager for the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, a private family foundation with a $1 billion endowment that works to increase public awareness of the nature and urgency of key fiscal challenges facing US citizens. Kim’s previous experiences include working with the youth employment program at Henry Street Settlement, a community-based organization in lower Manhattan; with the grants team at MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, an international public charity grantmaker and with First 5 Kern, a tax revenue-funded grantmaker based in Kern County, California.

Kim holds a master’s degree in nonprofit management from Milano School of International Affairs, Management and Urban Policy at The New School and a bachelor’s degree in political science from California State University, Bakersfield. She has been an active volunteer with multiple PEAK Grantmaking chapters since 2013.

Cesar Del Valle, Director of Partnerships, Candid

Born in Mexico City, Cesar was brought up in California and Nayarit. He holds a bachelor's in statistics from the University of California, Berkeley and received an MBA from ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain. Post grad school, Cesar co-founded a social enterprise in India tackling food insecurity in urban slums and scaled operations to Ghana. He is an experienced entrepreneur with a passion for social impact. He was the director of growth and development for the Hult Prize Foundation and opened their Mexico City office as he scaled incubation programs for aspiring social entrepreneurs throughout Mexico and Latin America.

Cesar brings his nearly two decades of entrepreneurial, startup and development experience to Candid, where he is entrusted with building, maintaining and establishing medium and long-term strategic relationships with philanthropic organizations, governmental agencies, multilateral agencies and the broader social sector. Cesar is currently focused on the standardization and collection of demographic data for the U.S. social sector and is driven by the opportunity to bring more transparency, measurability and accountability to the sector, in order to support more equitable grantmaking practices and ensure more impact dollars go to proximate leaders and BIPOC-led organizations.

Background and Registration

The Philanthropy Northwest Network Call series takes place one Friday every month to bring an important topic to our network. The goal of these calls is to lift up an issue to our network of funders to deepen their learning, inspire action, and highlight where philanthropy might intersect with this work.

These calls are open for anyone to join. You don’t have to be from a philanthropic organization or a member of Philanthropy Northwest, but please note these conversations are framed around philanthropy, and the role philanthropy might play around a particular issue.

Registering for a Philanthropy Northwest Network Call automatically adds you to the Network Calls listserv. You can unsubscribe and remove your email from the list at any time.

Accessibility

Philanthropy Northwest strives to make our events accessible to everyone. On these calls, we offer closed captioning and speakers give physical descriptions of themselves in their introductions. The calls are also recorded and we share the recordings and other supportive resources within a week after the call. If you require an accommodation or service to fully participate, please contact JulieAnne Behar
