Philanthropy Northwest announces Community Foundation Initiative

Philanthropy Northwest is pleased to announce a unique initiative to support community foundations in their role as philanthropic champions of community well-being.

Thanks to generous underwriting from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Philanthropy Northwest will re-grant one hundred sixty thousand dollars ($160,000) to Washington community foundations to help them build the capacity of nonprofit organizations providing critical services in their areas.

Additionally, Philanthropy Northwest will dedicate staff to support a peer network of community foundations in Washington state and throughout the region. The initiative was announced last week at a gathering of Washington community foundations in Bellingham, Washington.

Annual Conference keynote: Bill Ruckelshaus
Bill Ruckelshaus, former chair of the Puget Sound Partnership and the first administrator of the EPA, will join the opening keynote panel of Philanthropy Northwest’s 2010 Annual Conference, held at Semiahmoo Resort on the shores of Puget Sound. The opening panel will explore how collaborative, and sometimes difficult, problem solving can support and be informed by the "Power of Place."

Efforts by the Puget Sound Partnership to protect and restore the health of the Sound will set the stage for a broader discussion about the unique role philanthropy plays in addressing complicated community issues. The panel will also include Richard Woo, CEO of the Russell Family Foundation, which is focused on environmental sustainability in the Puget Sound region, and moderator Daniel Kemmis, Philanthropy Northwest board member and author of Community and the Politics of Place. Medina Foundation launches rural nonprofit capacity building initiative
Over the next 18 months, the Medina Foundation will plan and implement a capacity building initiative that will provide trainings and competitive grants for current Medina Foundation grantees based in Washington's Whatcom and Skagit counties. The purpose of the initiative is to strengthen organizational capacity among current grantees of the Foundation in both counties. Based on the outcomes of the pilot, Medina would like to extend the program to all of the counties that are part of its Rural Initiative.
