Philanthropy Northwest 2010 Annual Conference sessions announced!
Expanding on this year's theme - "The Power of Place" - conference sessions will explore how philanthropy can strengthen communities from the bottom up. What happens when we listen first, and act second? How can funders form true partnerships with grantees, policymakers and organizations?
Planned sessions include:
We're All in This Together: National-Local Foundation Partnerships Lessons Learned: Directing a Foundation in a Recession Evaluation for Corporate Giving Strategic Communications Planning for Foundations Trading Power: Next Generation Family Philanthropists Funder Collaborations in Education Building Business and Assets in Native Communities Local Funding Alliances: Creating a Learning Community The Crooked Path: Lessons Learned in Funding Advocacy
"These sessions offer countless opportunities to learn, share and develop both professionally and personally," said conference planning committee member Stephanie Garrard of Wells Fargo. "Each of us has a unique way of building our communities, and there is so much shared at the conference that can be taken home and implemented to improve the already amazing work we do!"

Denali Commission completes 100th health clinic The Denali Commission Health Facilities Program marked a significant milestone last month with the completion of its 100th clinic facility in Skagway. Congress amended the Denali Commission Act in 1999 to provide for planning, designing, constructing and equipping health facilities. The Health Facilities Program at the Commission is a collaborative project, with the partnership of numerous organizations, including the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, the partner in Skagway. In most cases, clinics in rural Alaska provide the only access to healthcare for rural residents. “We have a lot more to do, but we’ve come a long way these past 11 years,” said Nancy Merriman, program manager for Senior Health Facilities.
Rasmuson Foundation awards $1.86 million in grants The Rasmuson Foundation Board of Directors awarded $1.86 million to nine organizations, including a special $55,000 contribution to the Seward Community Foundation in observation of the Rasmuson Foundation's 55th Anniversary. A $50,000 challenge grant to the Petersburg Community Foundation (Petersburg) was also approved, contingent on the community raising a 1:1 matching amount.
KeyBank mobilizes 8,000 employees for service day On May 25th, KeyBank Alaska celebrated the 20th anniversary of KeyBank's Neighbors Make the Difference Day. The first Neighbors day started at KeyBank in Alaska and has since spread across the bank's national footprint. This year, over 8,000 employees from Alaska to Maine spent the afternoon working on projects in their communities. Seventy-eight KeyBank Alaska employees (over 50% of the bank's workforce in the state) participated in 16 projects statewide, from Fairbanks to Kodiak and Unalaska to Juneau. Many branches closed to maximize volunteers, and branches that stayed open conducted food and clothing donation drives. Projects ranged from working at local food pantries and teaching financial education classes to prepping a home for NeighborWorks Anchorage in anticipation of their annual "Paint the Town" event.
