In an environment of shrunken endowments and smaller grantmaking budgets, having a clear direction and a detailed road map is more important than ever.

If the first step is developing a robust foundation strategy for achieving impact, the second is building capacity. Even as grantmakers seek greater organizational effectiveness among nonprofits, it is important for foundations to build their own infrastructure. A successful program strategy requires strong leadership, management, operational abilities and adaptability – all signs of high organizational capacity.

This interactive session will explore how strategic planning can enable a foundation to devise a program strategy, build organizational capacity, and create a framework for performance assessment. It will include step-by-step advice on assessing needs, sharpening focus, setting goals, articulating what success will look like, evaluating programs to make ongoing improvements, and determining the best governance and staffing models.

Amy Solomon of The Bullitt Foundation will also share how the foundation made important strategic changes to its work.

Teleconference will be available upon request, please contact Sue Bennett.

Presenters: Paul Connolly is a senior vice president at TCC Group, a firm that provides management consulting, strategic planning, and evaluation services to nonprofit organizations, philanthropies, and government agencies. Amy Solomon is a program officer at The Bullitt Foundation.
