Welcome new Philanthropy Northwest members

The Martinez Foundation,
founded by former Mariner Edgar Martinez and his wife Holli, strives to strengthen communities by providing underserved populations with educational opportunities.
The foundation is based in Bellevue, Washington.

The Park County Community Foundation
is a two-year old community foundation in Livingston, Montana, dedicated to enhancing the spirit of community and quality of life in Park County through stewardship of endowed funds, grantmaking and other activities.

Philanthropy Northwest releases
Trends in Northwest Giving

The new edition of Trends in Northwest Giving, Philanthropy Northwest’s comprehensive report on giving in our region, is hot off the presses. Giving to Northwest nonprofits grew more than 25% since 2006, while education remains the highest funding priority among Northwest funders. Copies of the report will be mailed to all members in the coming weeks. A portion of the report is available online.

Greater Tacoma Community Foundation compiles Myanmar relief resources
The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation has gathered information about the cyclone devastation in Myanmar, and resources for grantmakers interested in donating to relief efforts. Employees Community Fund of Boeing hits $500M
The Employees Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound celebrated the distribution of $500M in employee contributions to local communities since its inception in 1951. The milestone was commemorated by the United Ways of Washington at an event April 22, and a proclamation by Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire marking April 22 “Employees Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound Day.” The fund partners with 11 United Ways throughout Puget Sound.

Rasmuson Foundation creates Alaskan art gallery in Second Life
The Rasmuson Gallery of Alaskan Artists opened Monday, May 12, in Second Life, a 3D online virtual world. The gallery, hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, features the work of the foundation's Individual Artist Award recipients. The opening coincided with the announcement of the 2008 awards. Potlatch Fund nominated for Kellogg Award
Potlatch Fund is a 2008 Kellogg Foundation National Leadership in Action Award nominee. The award recognizes outstanding philanthropic and nonprofit leadership in communities of color. Winners receive a $50,000 grant and will be announced later this Spring.

Jeff Raikes is the new CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Jeff is a 27-year veteran Microsoft executive. He had announced plans to retire from Microsoft earlier this year. To read more about the new CEO, click here.

Lauren Moore will leave her position as director of giving and community affairs for Starbucks at the end of May. Lauren plans to spend the summer with her family before pursuing a new position. She continues to serve as past president of the Philanthropy Northwest Board.

Social Venture Partners (SVP) is accepting applications for the Brainerd Fellowship,
a two-year fellowship providing partnership for an individual who could not otherwise make the required financial commitment.
SVP partners serve on granting committees, internal working groups and provide volunteer consulting to nonprofits. For more information and online application, visit the

Milt Doumit is the new vice president of Washington State Public Affairs, Policy and Communications  for Verizon Foundation. Milt most recently worked as chief-of-staff for Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna.

Wendy Weiker is the new foundation specialist for Puget Sound Energy. Wendy previously worked for WaMu and Microsoft corporate giving.

Linda Menard is the new interim executive director for the Mat-Su Health Foundation. Linda, a Mat-Su board member since 2004, will hold the position until a new executive director is hired.
