Philanthropy by Women Rises, but Women, Minorities Underrepresented as Foundation Trustees

There are now more than 90 foundations created by and donating to women–up from five just 20 years ago, Business Week reported October 3, 2000. The magazine reported on the increasing trend of women giving to charity–they have long volunteered, the magazine said– driven by their increasing financial independence. Women are donating as much of their annual income as men, the article said, and, because they live longer and often manage family finances, are expected to eventually benefit more from the expected intergenerational transfer of wealth than men.

But despite their increased giving power, women are still in the minority in foundation boardrooms, according to a recent study from Women & Philanthropy. In a survey of "middle-tier" foundations (those that annually give between $6 and $16 million), the association found that women make up only 30 percent of these foundations’ trustees. This study, Trustee Connection: The Middle Tier, is meant to serve more as a snapshot of diversity–from gender to race to sexual orientation–than as a composite picture.
