Update: Permanent Charitable Tax Incentives Signed Into Law

Ann Saxton, Vice President

The U.S. Senate has followed the House of Representatives and made permanent three charitable giving tax incentives. We are thrilled to share that moments ago, President Obama signed this bill into law. This is a big win for communities!

For years philanthropy and nonprofits have sought support for making permanent the IRA charitable rollover, and enhanced deductions for the donation of food inventory as well as land conservation easements (now part of Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015 but formerly provisions in the America Gives More Act) but have had to settle for intermittent uncertainty and retroactive two-year extensions.

While we have been selective about the frequency in which we have emailed you on this issue, please know that we have been hard at work to support these charitable tax incentives to get them to the finish line. We are part of a tenacious nationwide coalition that has been working to raise awareness and educate legislators about the positive impact resulting from these tax incentives, which encourage generosity and exist for the public — rather than individual taxpayer — benefit.

This is really a thank you: when the appropriate time came we asked you to take action, and you did. Your action mattered – it is what made this achievement possible. We hope this success is tangible proof that when philanthropy uses its influence capital — in this case, raising its voice — it can effect even broader benefit to our communities. This is a reminder that together we can do great things.
