Resources for
Nonprofits There are many forms of
assistance for nonprofit organizations. This section
includes a listing of some known resources, and is not an
endorsement of particular organizations. The section is
divided into broad categories:
Foundation
Resources
THE FOUNDATION CENTER
Established as an independent national service
organization by foundations, The Foundation Center
provides an authoritative source of information on
private philanthropic giving, and remains one of the most
expansive and comprehensive resources for grantseekers.
One of the primary services it provides is the
Cooperating Collections Network, over 200 free funding
information centers in libraries, community foundations,
and other nonprofit agencies offering a core collection
of publications as well as a number of supplementary
materials and services. The core collection at each
Network site includes:
|
• Foundation Directory 1 & 2, and
supplement |
• Guide to U. S. Foundations, Their
Trustees,
Officers, and Donors |
|
• Guide to Grantseeking on the Web |
• National Guide to Funding in…
(series) |
|
• The Foundation 1000 |
• National Directory of Corporate
Giving |
|
• Foundation Fundamentals |
• The Foundation Center’s Guide to
Proposal
Writing |
|
• Foundation Giving |
• Foundation Grants Index |
|
• Literature of the Non-profit
Sector |
• National Directory of Grantmaking
Public
Charities |
|
• Foundation Grants Index Quarterly |
• Foundation Grants to Individuals |
Many of the network members make available for public
use sets of private foundation information returns (IRS
Form 990-PF) for their state and/or neighboring states.
In addition, the San Francisco office has IRS Form 990-PF
returns for the western states:

COLLECTIONS
The Pacific Northwest Cooperating Collections
are listed below.
All cooperating collections have access to the IRS Form 990-PF returns
for the state in which they are located and/or neighboring states.
A indicates
collections that have access to the Foundation Center's Database on CD-ROM
or via the Internet for public use. It is recommended that you call all Network
locations in advance of a visit to determine hours and availability of
the CD-ROM Database and IRS Form 990-PF returns.

particular foundation, contact the Internal Revenue
Service at 1-800-829-3676 and request form 4506. You may
also download this form from the IRS web site at
www.irs.ustreas.gov.
The cost for a copy
of each return is free for the first 100 pages and $.20 per page after
that. There is no charge to inspect a return at an
IRS office. You may inspect returns at any IRS district
office or at the IRS National Office in Washington, D.C.
NOTE: Corporate giving programs that are not organized
as separate foundations do not file IRS Form 990-PF
returns. Information about corporate giving programs can
be gathered in the business section of your local library
and from your chamber of commerce or other business
organizations.
