IN-KIND SUPPORT
Local businesses can support nonprofit organizations in a
variety of ways. Besides giving cash grants, they can often
help with the following kinds of services and resources.
- Help with one-time projects like brochures and
posters;
- Volunteer support for mailings, phone campaigns,
special events, or programs;
- Sources for used but serviceable furniture or office
equipment (with some judicious scouting through some
larger local businesses) or donations of product;
- Assistance in setting up advisory boards or providing
candidates for board members.
Other sources of potential in-kind assistance include:
- Communications, public relations, advertising
departments or agencies for help with publication
design, publicity campaigns, special events, community
activities, posters or logo design, and advertising
campaigns;
- Community relations or contributions professionals for
help with the preparation of fundraising materials and
proposals;
- Internal company or organizational newsletters to
recruit volunteers or promote your activities or
organization;
- Local companies for expertise in management,
budgeting, accountability, personnel, strategic
planning.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Your local United Way can be a source both of funding and
technical assistance, particularly for health and human
service organizations, but often for other nonprofits as
well. For example, the United Way of King County offers
extensive volunteer management assistance to all nonprofits
in their service area. United Ways will sometimes help with
operating expenses if you choose to qualify to become a
United Way agency. Call your local United Way to see what
services they might offer.

Your local community foundation may also be a source of
technical assistance, offering guidance in board development
and staff and volunteer training.
In some cases local service clubs, such as Rotary,
Kiwanis, Junior League, etc., can prove a source both of
cash and in-kind services. You can find out what local
service clubs are available through your local chamber of
commerce. The following publication might be a good resource
for locating sponsors; it lists over 400 business and
professional associations in the Puget Sound, WA area:
