About this event
Registration for Grantmakers in Action is now closed. If you are interested in joining a future Grantmakers in Action cohort, please contact JulieAnne Behar.
In recent years, foundations have evolved to put equity at the center of their work. As the philanthropic sector changes, so has the role of grantmakers. Join us for Grantmakers in Action to deepen your knowledge of the "art of grantmaking," discover the latest in trust-based practices and engage in peer learning alongside fellow grant staff in the Philanthropy Northwest network.
In this learning series you will plug into conversations and movements around:
- Centering racial equity in your grantmaking;
- Alternatives to the traditional grantmaking cycle;
- Partnership models; and
- Power dynamics in your role and leveraging your leadership.
Participants will leave this three-session series with tangible practices to level up your grantmaking, a strong equity lens for your work as well as the tools to apply it and peer connections with grantmakers from philanthropies across the Northwest.
Register and join to engage with a community of peers while you build out your grantmaking toolbox for 2024!
Who should attend?
Grantmakers in Action is open to grantmakers, grant managers, grant support and grant operations staff. Participants are expected to already have a foundational understanding of:
- The traditional grantmaking cycle/process.
- Diversity, equity and inclusion, including basic definitions and distinctions between these terms.
- Philanthropy terms and concepts such as restricted vs unrestricted grant funds, fundamentals of 501(c)(3) structure and limitations, fiscal sponsorship, etc.
- Origins of philanthropy, including how wealth in philanthropy was generated and how histories of colonization and racism factor into wealth accumulation.
Sessions
April 2 |
Unpacking My Role and the Grant Cycle |
April 16 | Partnership in Practice This session is all about how to navigate and mitigate power dynamics, and ultimately strengthen the relationship between funders and grantees. Through interactive activities, we will surface opportunities for greater transparency, trust and impact in your grantmaking practice. We will examine specific areas where you can apply this such as funding decisions, grant reporting and evaluation. There will also be an opportunity to workshop real problems of practice with your peer community. |
April 30 | Money and Me: Financials and Repacking my Role In this two-part session, we will explore both grant financials and close out our series with resources and actions to carry forward. This session will be an opportunity to learn how to incorporate equity into your financial review process, no matter the size of your organization or grant portfolio. Come ready to toss out those nonprofit sustainability myths! We will close with a chance to "repack" our roles, set intentions and leadership goals to further your grantmaking practice. |
Each session will run from 10 am to 1 pm PDT! Participants are expected to commit to attending all three sessions.
