EngAGEment Initiative
A Program in collaboration with Grantmakers in Aging

What is EngAGEment?
Philanthropy Northwest is one of six Regional Associations of
Grantmakers selected by Grantmakers In Aging to participate in our
two-year EngAGEment Initiative to engage new foundations and funders to
aging.
Over the next two years, Philanthropy Northwest
will be partnering with organizations around our region to bring our
members and others in our communities information on how funders can
make a difference in this area.

Service Corps of Washington
Many 50+ are looking to begin a new chapter in life by being active

before have we had so many people who have vast experience to share… who
have the health and economic security that allows them to share it…
If we get ready.

Turning Silver to Gold in Our Communities
Through the EngAGEment Initiative, GIA has started to develop
a series of Issue Briefs to help introduce funders to many of the issues
of aging. The briefs are designed to give an overview of the
subject, statistics, charts, links and funding possibilities. The first
issue is now available. Future issues will be posted when they are
completed. Together these briefs will form a great handbook/resource for
funders interested in aging. The first publication available is
Turning Silver to Gold in Our Communities.

Member Survey Results:
Philanthropy Northwest conducted a member survey in July 2005
to get a clear sense of priorities and perceptions around aging issues.
65 members participated.
-
Funders most frequently identified the
“economically disadvantaged” and “children and youth” as target
populations for funding over the next five years.
-
For members who include aging issues in their
spectrum of giving, they ranked it as their #3 funding priority.
-
These members also believe that the federal
government is most responsible for taking care of our nation's aging.
Members who do not fund aging-related programs think that families
should carry the load. Both groups ranked philanthropy behind
government, family and employers in terms of responsibility for
funding programs for the elderly.
